Aircraft Crash Site 

Wellington BJ697

Crashed 25th September 1942

 

The location of the crash is South of Fan Hir at approximately 510m

The aircraft crashed on a night cross country exercise and flew off course.

The pilot died of his injuries, two more aircrew were badly injured, but survived and another survived unhurt.

The Wellington BJ697, took off from RAF Chipping Warden and crashed into the mountain side of the Brecon Beacons, South of Fan Hir, on a cross country navigational exercise and flew off course.

The Crew survived the impact, despite the aircraft being engulfed in flames; evidence of this is at the site, in the form of molten alloy, from an intense heat.

Although surviving the impact, SGT Kenneth Sockling Hardwick Bird, died of his injuries a few days later.
