Aircraft Crash Site 

Vampire VZ106

Crashed 9TH October 1953

 

 

The location of the crash is on the West slope of Fan Hir at approximately 620m.

The aircraft crashed due to coming down out of low cloud and flew into the mountain side, on a general training flight on the 9th October 1953

The single pilot on board was killed

F/O John Raymond Baldock

Wreckage remains on site, and has been laid out, to roughly form the shape of the plane.

The Vampire VZ106, flying on test runs out of Pembrey, descended through low cloud, and crashed into the Black Mountains, West of Fan Hir.

A second aircraft was also on the test flight, but managed to catch a glimpse of the mountain and managed to pull up in time.
