Aircraft Crash Site

Crashed 23RD May 1942

 

The aircraft crashed on the 23rd May 1942, just above Gwaun- Nant DDu at approximately 680m. 

It crashed during a formation flying exercise and due to poor weather and navigational error hit the side of the mountain.

The pilot was killed instantly.

Some small bits of wreckage remain and built into memorial but have since been scattered

 

Spitfire X4588 was thought to have crashed due to bad weather and navigational error.

The aircraft was based at RAF Llandow part of operational training unit 53. The aircraft took off for a formation exercise and hit the mountain at Gwain Nant Ddu at approximately 680 m.

The Pilot Sgt Donald Perry Carruthers from the Royal Canadian Air force was killed and buried at Llantwit Major Cemetery.
