Aircraft Crash Site 

Lancaster W4929

Crashed 5TH September 1943

 

The location of the crash is North of Fan Foel

at approximately 490m.

The aircraft flew into the mountain side during a night cross country exercise on the 5th September 1943.

All 8 aircrew were killed

F/O Folkersen, Sgt. Buckby , Sgt Curran, P/O Duxbury , Sgt Holding, Sgt Wilson, Sgt Pratt, P/O Johnson

Wreckage remains on site including Merlin engines.

 

For reasons unknown the Lancaster W4929 crashed under power into the Black Mountain range, all on board perished. A heavy storm was recorded at the time which may have had an impact on the reasons for the crash.

Crew members were buried at Hereford, Bath, Clithroe, Hemel Hempstead and Woking Cemeteries.

A Sea King Helicopter flew relatives and friends of the crew to the site on the 50th anniversary of the crash, where a memorial plaque was erected and a service held.
