Crashed 11th February 1966

 

The aircraft crashed during, terrain, following, radar trials, and impacted during bad weather and low altitude.

All 5 crew members were killed.

The bulk of the wreckage was removed by the authorities

But some small pieces remain

The wreckage is on private land

The Avro Vulcan B MK.2 XH536, took off from RAF Cottesmore in Rutland, on cross country flight. It descended to low level and encountered snow covered mountains merging with the horizon. Disorientated the aircraft ploughed into the mountainside at Fan Bwlch Chwyth on the western side.

Locals reported a noise similar to that of a blast from one of the nearby quarries.
